Just curious as to what everyone has now and is towing with. Please list wheel/tire sizes and brands, how much lifted/lowered, brands of lift/lower kits. Fuel milage, programmers, exhaust, Ect. Just trying to get an idea on what everyone has and how you like them. Thanks Patrick

Mine on short trips. It has a 6" Fabtec lift, 20" wheels and 36" IROKs, along with 4.88's front and rear. It pulls my little open trailer and coupe with no problems
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j316/ChrisSFowler_photos/745342028_l.jpg

On longer trips I borrow one of two vehicles from my parents. Either a 4 door, 4wd F350 diesel dually, or their 36' RV (for overnight trips, I'll have it in Bradenton this weekend)

I have a flip chip with an economy tune in it.On the highway i set the cruise at 78-80mph and just let it ride.

2000 F250, 258k miles, 6" SuperLift, 17x10 Weld Racing Cheyenne 8's, 37x12.50x17 ProComp Xtreme A/T's, DP Tuner "Econo" tune, FTVB, Tymar, etc, etc.

Pull a 55ft sailboat from Atlanta to Florida @ 70mph the entire way. Got 14-16mpg. Unloaded, I could get low 20's if I drove it with any kind of sanity, but as I do, I stay in the 18-19mpg range. Got around 24-26 before I lifted it.

Save your money diesel is $3.49 to $2.95 for reg unleaded around here.

Save your money diesel is $3.49 to $2.95 for reg unleaded around here.

Depending on the diesel truck, he'd still come out cheaper.

Let's use 500 miles as a benchmark.

He says his truck gets 15mpg. So to drive 500 miles, he'll use 33.33 gallons of fuel. At $2.95/gal, that's $98.33 to go 500 miles.

QJP's truck gets "at least" 25mpg (for the sake of math, close enough). So to drive 500 miles, QJP will use 20 gallons of fuel. At $3.49/gal that's $69.80 to go 500 miles, or $28.53 in savings.

Say he fills up every week, that's about $1484 of savings just in fuel per year. That savings would go even higher if he tows a lot.

Flamed03
03-03-2008, 10:48 PM
Its $3.51 here, vs $3.18 for reg. unleaded. The good news is 110 leaded is still $5.95/gal :)

It would just be nice to have the power, along with the fuel economy. My dads 7.3 with a Edge programer, western diesel intake and downpipe/full exhaust, pulling a 24' Enclosed trailer will outrun my F150 from a roll. While getting better mileage.

I'll get a new F250 in a year or so, I'm going to wait untill they get the kinks worked out of the 6.4's before I buy, and then, hopefully a blue 4wd, 4 door king ranch will find its way into my driveway.

here you go. 2000 4WD Excursion w/ a complete 2006 ft end w/ steel cowl hood and painted King Ranch turn signal mirrors. I used it to kill a Scion XA so it got a new front end and paint. It has a 1.5 leveling kit w/ Edelbrock shocks and Nitto 305's. SCT 4 pos chip Motorcraft AIS intake and turbo back 4" stainless exhaust. Mileage sucks, working on some new tunes. I suffer from lead foot disease and 27lbs on the 3-4 shift pretty much smokes out the competition.

I see your point but the diesel trucks are more expensive to purchase and higher to maintain. I just couldnt justify buying a huge truck just to pull my car with. Just my .02

That's really a mute point. Yes, they cost more to purchase, but they also hold their value more. Check what a 2000 diesel vs gas F250 sells for.

and higher to maintain.

I hear that thrown around all the time, but I just don't believe it. Do oil changes cost more? Yes. Do you need to change the fuel filters more? Yes. However, diesels can go much longer between oil changes than you should with a gas engine. Not to mention you don't have the added cost as you do with a gasonline engine of having to do tuneups. No plugs, wires, distributors, coils, etc.

I just couldnt justify buying a huge truck just to pull my car with.

That's really a personal justification that doesn't have any bearing on the original statement of not going diesel because of fuel costs.

I just prefer diesels personaly. They have more power, hold their value, and tend to last. Dad's 350 has close to 200k on it, and the only work he has done to it (besides the aftermarket stuff) has been the crankshaft position sensors, and they just had a recall on that.

As for the other tow vehicles, you guys were making me feel inadequate, so here's the rig I'll be in this weekend at bradenton. Its my parents '08 Hurricane. Has 3 slides, is 36' long, and gets a whopping 6mpg. Downhill. With a strong tail wind. They had a '98 diesel pusher with a Cummins, but it was starting to have little issues with leaks and what not, as well as $600.00 services. Plus, diesel in south Florida is hard to come by. So they sold it, and bought this one. It has a 3valve V10, and actualy moves out pretty good for what it is.

I honestly wouldn't trade my truck ( 2008 F450) for the world. It has everything I need / want, and nothing i dont.

I have only had it 10 days but almost 1800 miles on the clock. it doesn't get the greatest gas mileage which is between 12-14mpg but sense my dealer i deal with ( mall of GA ford ) said they would allow me to keep my warranty, as long as i don't go too extreme with the mods. i think ill be doing a couple of things because people are saying 18-20 mpg isn't hard to get if you can keep your foot out of it.

also the Diesel performance shops are now getting access to custom tuning software and one shop has a STOCK 250 putting down 490whp and 830 ftlb of torque bone stock with their 200 hp tune and over 530whp and 997 ftlb of torque with their 250 hp tune and the trucks are holding fine so far. the owner of the shop has been trying to blow his up for about a month now.

not to start anything because i don't know how it was calculated(by hand or over head display)but i highly doubt anyone is getting any better than 22 mpg with there 99-03 7.3 psd.if they really are then they are doing something that no one else in the PSD community can do.if you are going by the over head display well they are off and after you add a tuner they are way off.my 02 with just exhaust and a dp-tuner 80 econo would only do about 21 hwy and now with the lift and tires with heavy 18in rims i get about 18 hwy.i have had several of these trucks and the best i ever got was 22 with a 6-speed 99 i.auto's get less then the 6-speed in most cases.

Hi-psi
03-08-2008, 03:03 PM
I got 22-23mpg hand caclulated on my 2000 4x4, crew cab, auto before lifting it. This was with a DP Tuner tune, Tymar, straight pipe exhaust. Given that, with Brian having a non-lifted 2wd, and a specific tune for highway mileage, I don't see his claims as being unrealistic. It has a lot to do with the way you drive it and the rpm range you stay in.

nastynotchback1
03-08-2008, 03:08 PM
i can see people getting that mileage if they are trying to get it but come on your not on the interstate running on cruise all the time.what is the calculated mileage when you mix drive like most people do???i bet its 20 tops!!!!

Hi-psi
03-08-2008, 03:18 PM
Regardless, it's still the mileage the vehicle can get.

If your Mustang runs 12.0's, is it going to do it every time, every track, every weather condition, every situation? Absolutely not. Doesn't mean it didn't, or can't run 12.0's.

And I'd say 95% of my driving is interstate.

nastynotchback1
03-08-2008, 03:36 PM
gonna run close to that all the time unless something is wrong.may very a tenth somtimes .it's not going to slow to a 12.60 just because.your comparing apples to oranges.let's just forget about it because i am not an arguing on the net kinda a guy.

Bought it with 6K on the clock and now have 114K on it. Hope to see 314K on it someday. It's the best truck I've ever owned. I average 16-18 around town and 20-22 on the highway.

The L has 176K on the ticker and is the best truck I ever bought, one of these days I'll install all the cool parts I have for it.
