Well track conditions wasn't very good and we were spinning out of the hole and we wouldn't even running gas. The best we got out of ours was 10.06 @ 134 with a 1.44 60ft I think. The staff at Atlanta was awful, they even caused a wreck through there ignorance. A thunderbird went down the track blowing oil or antifreeze all the way down past the 1/8 mile and it was very obvious to everyone that he layed down fluid everywhere but they went ahead and sent cars down the track anyway, after the first set went through the guy in the right lane slid when he hit it, then they sent another pair down, that car hit it and slid and by this time everyone was shouting at the track officials to shut the track down and even though they was on the radio telling them about what was going on they sent another pair and a mustang hit it and went into a slide and into the guardrail.
They made us sit at the entrance till lunch time while they took in 10 or so trailers at a time. They wasted so much time that we only got in one time run Friday and that my friends they called Test-N-Tune. They called up 25 cars at a time and took there sweet time to call 25 more up. Then on Sat they finally figured out there dumb azz way of doing things was going to take a week to run the race. Then they go into a hectic mode where they started calling up 75 to 100 at a time they would have the pair in the staging lights, a pair in the burn out box doing there burnout while they were still staged, and a pair right behind the one's doing the burnout to where they where slinging rubber on our cars. Then when we done the burn out they wouldn't even give you time to check your gages or make any adjustments or even clean your motor out and courtesy staging was out of the question lol. They was even letting the next pair go even though the cars that just ran just passed the line. Hell they even sent cars down on a guy that was broke and his car was sitting on the left side of the track and the racer had to go to the middle to miss him.
All in all we had a fun, hectic, tiresome, weekend. 65 Mopar was running 10.20's and Streetcars was running 9.60's. Everyone was off a 10th or more. I am really undecieded if we will be racing Pinks All Out again. It was fun but the Pinks crew and the track staff made it a very dangerous weekend for sure.

It was the same at Bristol last year. they tried to send me down the track and the car in front of me stopped before the turn off. They got a little pissed because I backed out of the beams and wouldnt stage until I seen the car turn off the track. So many cars oiled down the track they had to shut down the LH lane for 1/2 of the arm drop passes.
When you go there you sign a paper that says you wont sue them even if they are negligent, its a shame that when they are in such a hurry they dont watch out for the racers, but thats the track personnel's fault really, they should be looking out for the racers.
Its a fun thing to do once or twice, I did it twice last year and the first time wasnt bad because the weather was crappy and there were only like 250 cars. Bristol had a crapload of cars and it seems every show is more and more crowded.

I have been down Atlanta Dragway over 100 passes in the years we lived in Ga. Only problem I ever had was that the starting line was incosistent. The safety things were never an issue when I raced there. Although things change! If you're a good racer and you are sent down on run with cars in the shutdown you shouldnt have a problem. It seems like the same people complaining here have issues with other tracks as well. Atlanta Dragway does have a NHRA National Event there. Plus we won Super Chevy there before...... All this makes for good conversation! If all the PRO cars from NHRA can get down the track why cant the sportsman cars that run 9 seconds and slower?

Pinks has nothing to do with NHRA national events, it has to do with getting 500 cars down the track in a limited amount of time, I have raced at Atlanta many times and the safety there has always been decent. But these things are hurried and there are a ton of leakers that just dont get cleaned up properly at times due to a TV filming schedule and limited staff.
I dont know what a 'good' racer is supposed to do if there is a car still on the track when they try to send you down, but I'm not going down the track if there is a car in my lane in front of me.

Kevin...depends where the car is in front of me when I stage and if it is moving. If that car is ready to turn off the shutdown area and I am staging....no biggie! I guess I shouldnt have said good racer but instead a seasoned and experienced racer. Its a TV show and not a race to some. I was told there was many oil downs. I wasnt compairing PINKS to a NHRA event. There isnt any comparisin. NHRA just wants yer $$$ and to bend ya over........... A "good" racer can make his/her car hook. By the way,was it a male or female that won the PINKS TV SHOW??? Kevin, I consider you a seasoned, experienced racer.

Mike, NOBODY should send a car down with a broke car on the track!! NOBODY should keep sending cars down a track after an oil down!! Any racer seasoned or not KNOWS this much. And if you were refering to me as the complainer I have you know I have NEVER complained about I-40 dragway's track conditioned as they have ALWAYS been the best around. You ALWAYS just want to get shit started as USUAL......

I have no problem making a car hook, but if you have oil/water on the track it gets a little tough. Especially on small tires with a heavy car. But hooking on the line wasnt what most are complaining about, its hooking down the track. IMO the biggest problem is normally most guys will just lift, on these shows I have seen way too many people stay in it (or get back in it) and wreck their car.
I have been to Atlanta for the NHRA, ORSCA and NMCA races and they do an excellent job of keeping the track up the whole day, but generally you have a lot of tech and very few oil downs. The Pinks things have a lot of shitboxes going down the track, IMO the biggest problem is the leakers and that is a somewhat direct result of lack of teching the cars in. Couple that along with a TV show schedule and you are bound to have some problems.
I have nothing against the all-out thing, they are a lot of fun but they need to limit the cars or make it a longer event.
Not 100% sure who won this all out in Atlanta, think a red C5 vette from MTI in Georgia won, a guy drives it I'm pretty sure.

Just thought I would share my Pink's All Out experience. We arrived at the track friday at noon and were hearded into a holding area and told that we would be moved to another area shortly. We waited for an hour or so and decided to walk down to the track and see what was going on since some cars were running. Didn't stay long and on the walk back we see that the group we were parked with was pulling out. The track folks bitch a little and said to hurry up or we would be put in the back of the line. They never made an announcement. We then went with the flow to the pits where we were parked by track workers and waited some more for our number(376) to be called for tech inspection. Our cluster was finally called about 6:30-7:00pm. We waited in line for tech for about an hour and finally our inspector walked up. He was a nice guy and did check us very well. I was told I could not use the NO2 because I did not have a fire wall on the back seat or a blow down tube. I didn't complain and just ran motor. After tech we had to sign all the release forms and get the picture taken. By then, our group was call for first test run, so I changed clothes in the time shack rest room. Sat in line for another twenty minutes and got my first 1/4 mile pass. I ended up making a solo pass because the guy I lined up with broke. His number was 409 and I hope he fixed it and got to run Saturday. I was tickeled with my pass although I wish it had been quicker. I ran an 11.721 @ 117.16 MPH on the motor. Not to bad for your grannys Caddy motor in a Buick. We found out that there would not be a second run that day and setteled in for a night at the track. Things didn't wind down there til the wee hours. Lots of generator noise all night long and 4 wheelers and golf carts ferrying drunks around all night long.
Saturday was another hurry up and wait day. We finally got called for our first run after 2pm. Things did move a bit quicker than they did on friday for the first pass of the day. I ran 11.717 @ 116.97 MPH on the second 1/4 pass ever in the Cadillac powered Buick. I'm thinking that maybe being that consistant is a good thing as far as chances of being picked as per there requirements. We waited another two hours for our arm drop pass and things were flying by then. They are trying to run cars on top of cars by then in order to get everybody in. No time on the last pass, but the butt dyno told me that it was the best yet, but I'll never know since they didn't post times or give time slips. Hurry up and wait some more for the 16 to be decided on. We missed out on the 16, but I never expected to make the field so I wasn't disapointed with the odds of making 16/500.
I have read several posts of complaints about the whole deal, but my experience was very positive. I had a blast even with all the waiting. We had no problems with the car and never touched it. In my opinion it dosen't get any better than that. I didn't run what I hoped for, but didn't break anything either. Safe trip there and back and we ate well while there. Met lots of very nice people and saw lots of nice cars. Damn near a perfect weekend in my book. Maybe I haven't been doing this long egnough to bitch about things like some of the more experienced racers. Atlanta Dragway had tons of employees and the track clean up looked very well done in my inexperience opinion. Sure some mistakes were made and hopefully lessons learned for them. Pink's staff seemed to look for stand out in the crowd cars that would appeal to their viewers and cna't blame them for wanting to please the public. It's their show after all. The paperwork we got when we entered the track said that this is not a race, but the filming of a TV show pretty well summed it up. Would I do it again? Hell Yeah, in a heartbeat.

Well since we redid everything in my truck we never got to make a test pass on the new suspension and upgrades until my first pass there. My first pass was a 11.67@114 and sat it was 11.51@116 but I could tell the arm drop pass was my best so far. I lined up with another s10 that runs a 10.50 and he beat me by a car,so it was a little better. I wish we could have done some more testing on it before we went so we could have done out adjustments but oh well,it was fun anyway. I think my pinion angle is off a little but will fix it soon. I've never run a 1/4 mile until then but it was awesome. Rich flinched his hands on the arm drop and I went, they all thought I jumped him but the tower said it was good. I couls have run faster but it was still a fun weekend. Now I have to work the bugs out.

Well maybe my post sounded worse than I meant for it since I was wore out on my way home when I posted it because by all means we did have a great time but safety is very high up in my book and no amount of fun is worth someone crashing there car or getting killed and Saturday safety was thrown out the window and a driver lost his car and could have lost alot more because of the way they done things. Now if that offends anyone I am truly sorry.

Hey Jones....didnt catch what happened and didnt realize someone was almost killed. Can you fill me in from your perspective? One thing that does disturb me is when a person crashes a race car it seems like everyone blames the problem on the track. Was someone severly injured?
Buick C Type
05-12-2008, 08:40 PM
No injuries that I heard of, but after an oil down/fluid leak there were reports of track workers that did not respond too quick on that problem and several racers did drive thru it. One report of a Vette that hit the wall from the fluid from that oil down. I think it was a thunderbird that caused it and it took some time to clean up after the problem was addressed. There was one wreck that was not due to the track, but driver error. You can read about it in the Atlanta section and the driver did take full fault for the accident.
