View Full Version : Is there a way to effectively repair subwoofer surrounds?

I just got done building a little box for my truck that I was gonna use some old MTX 10's i've had forever. I thought I fixed them years ago, but the surround has come unglued from the metal basket.
Basically, if I mounted the subs inverted(magnet visible), they'd work perfect...but I can't do that in a truck.
I remember I tried "something" before when this happened to them the first time, but whatever it was it didn't work. Can anyone recommend anything to help me out?
These were good subs back in the day, just required a slightly larger sealed box that most newer 10" subs.
I've ordered a another sub, a Kicker 05C10-4 but would still like these repaired to maybe put in my Mustang or the girls Sentra.
I bought me some "box building equipment" and i'm havin' some fun. :)

They are just glued in place. I would get some good glue and re glue them. What size and kind of MTX subs are they? I have 3 MTX thunder pros that I might be able to help you out with.

They are the old ThunderPro500's I believe....something 500. I know they're not the ThunderCAST because they have stamped basket.
What kind of glue? I remember using some kind of clear glue on them, as I can see some of the residue in the woofer mounting holes. Would it be best to use a more elastic glue or more rigid? The stuff thats on it now is rigid and will flake if I pick on the excess.

Will do! Thanks!!! I'm havin' some fun building boxes again. I used to make'em back in High School for 50$ plus materials. I'm a little rusty, but now that i've got the stuff I need to do it right i'm in good shape.
I figured with me being soo poor, I could add on another room to my cardboard box, or at least use some left-over MDF to make a more solid roof for my little shante' I call a home.

C.A. glue is the correct glue to use when re-coning subwoofers. It doesn't disolve the foam-rubber surround, (some glues do) and is absolutely permanent once you spray the catalyst on it. It is available at any hobby/RC car shop; used mainly for building model airplanes and such. I have some if you need to use some.

I need a bunch man...I also have a 15" Crunch that needs some of that. I'll visit a Hobby Store and pick up a tube to have on hand.
Not sure if it matters, but it came unglued from the metal basket part, not from the cone part.
Thanks! Oh...Supra's go 7's in the 1/4 mile stock. There....I feel better now. ;)

What is C.A. glue?
Tony is you use gorilla glue use it sparingly because it likes to expand. I have 3 Thunder Pros if you can't fix yours

C.A. glue is a type of adhesive that hardens instantly when it comes in contact with a catalyst that is misted out of a "hairspray" type bottle. It comes in black or clear, in three different viscositys (to make it easier to work with)
The beauty, is that you can apply all of your adhesive, and it remains a liquid untill you get the surround exactly where you want it, then you just mist the area around the glue and it cures INSTANTLY. It's stronger than super-glue too.

Yes, it is used to glue the surround to the metal basket. Once it's on there, they won't come off, EVER.

I'd like to put 1 sub, probably just a 10" or 12", in the Acura. If I buy one, you wanna build me a box for it? I don't want anything fancy, just a little thump.

I'd certainly do my best....can't gaurantee you'd win car shows with it or anything.
You may be able to goto Wal-Mart and pick-up a "YOU BUILD IT" box. They're like 20$ and have all the screws/pre-cut wood/carpet/grill you'd need. I mean...it's 20$ I wanted to get that one for the truck, but dimensionaly it just didn't work.
Also, you can get all kinds of pre-built boxes online, but FUCKS SAKE, to ship a 20$ box they're gonna charge you 40+ dollars in damn SHIPPING!!!!!

I build custom boxes, and they look nice when they are finished. I can also calculate tuning frequency, port area, volume, etc...
Basically tune the frequency of the box to the type of music that you listen to.
I can also do fiberglass boxes, that take better advantage of odd spaces in a trunk so you save space.

Yea, Ill deffinetly got the upper hand on me. I just figure out box volume, cut 6 panels, and screw'em together. I was also never good with ported boxes. I built a killer bandpass box one time and it sounded pretty good(for rap music, all other music was kinda muddy).
While we're rambling, would 1/4" MDF be suitable to use instead of the normal 3/4 stuff? I mean, i'm not building setups that shake the ground. Stuff under 500 watts.
I'm gonna try'n build a spare tire sub-box for that Crunch 15 I have and slap it in the Mustang for some rumble.

1/4 is OK for little stuff, the biggest problem with that is that it is not thick enough to screw into "end" wise, to you have to "frame" the inside of the box with 2"v2" wood to give you something to screw into. Becasue the spare tirewell is so small for a 15", I would definitely do a fiberglass mold of it to take advantage of every cubic inch. It's easy and relatively cheap. I would use a 3/4" top plate though, so that it is strong enough to support the weight of a 15" sub.

Oh, for the 15, i'd use the heavy stuff, but I was thinking of just using the 1/4 stuff for the girlfriends box with that other 10 I have. Probably put a 100-150 watt amp on that. Sealed box.....i'm not porting expert. Plus, I kinda like that tighter sound a sealed box gives.

If you use 1/4 mdf to build a box for anything bigger than a tweeter,I'm coming over to kick you in the nuts....

BTW,Use devcon 2 part epoxy from walmart. you can buy the one with the pre mix tip on it so you dont have to make a mess. Its the best.PERIOD

Well, to those that were staying awake tonite wondering what I was gonna do and what my super awesome skills at box making look like....here ya' go. I finished it up today. I ended up just getting a 3$ thing of glue from Wal-Mart(since I was already thee getting carpet glue, carpet and some other house crap. The gorilla glue is pretty awesome stuff. It seems strong than ANYTHING i've used before. That other stuff may be stronger, but I thing this'll work for now. If not, i'll try the other.
Anyway, it fits perfect in my little ranger and most importantly I can still use ALL my legroom that I need and can recline back plenty far. I'm pleased...not perfect by any means but for my uses it's beyond good enough. ;)
The box ended up measuring an internal box volume of right at .96 which should be good for this sub or the Kicker thats on the way. I'll see which sounds better.

At first I thought it was Appetite for Distruction 1 b/c of the colors but it didn't have the same design. But after your little clue I knew what it was.
