Georgia National Guardsman Killed in Action in Afghanistan
First Sergeant John D. Blair, a member of 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry of
the Georgia National Guard was killed in action June 20 in Afghanistan
supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Below is the official Department of
the Army announcement on this incident.
The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Soldier who was
supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
1st Sgt. John D. Blair, 38, of Calhoun, Ga., died June 20 in Mado Zayi,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his
vehicle. He was an Army National Guardsman assigned to the 1st Battalion,
121st Infantry in Lawrenceville, Ga.
Georgia’s Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement upon the death
of Blair, "Sgt Blair demonstrated courage and a readiness to accept the same
dangers that he asked of the Soldiers under his command. Mary and I continue
to pray for all our Soldiers in harm’s way, and we know Georgians will
remember 1st Sgt. Blair’s service and sacrifice."
Major General Terry Nesbitt, Georgia’s Adjutant General said, "1st Sgt Blair
was a senior enlisted leader with a true 'Follow Me' spirit. He was a hero
to the men he commanded and to the members of the 48th Infantry Brigade
Combat Team with whom he served. Our thoughts and prayers are with this
family during this very difficult time."
John was a former Sheriffs Officer for Gordon County and was currently assigned to the Georgia Counterdrug Task Force. He should be back to Calhoun around the last part of the week.
