you dont seem very sure about either. i race IHRA brackets at Virginia Motorsports Park. if you were expecting a Pro Mod car, i can only say that you expected too much. while its easy to envision me as a Top Fuel or Mountain Motor participant, my budget wont allow it. i am refitting my car with a better cage and im working on a new engine for Super Rod competition. i would have finished it sooner, but i bought too many guns this year, and the bills keep rolling in. delays, delays.

that should satisfy your curiosity. ill grant you no more answers if you dont ask nicely.

I never really thought about which classification I would fit into. I guess I would be one of the people that thinks Dart knows a shitload more about engine blocks than you do, or maybe I think splayed billet caps are great on a DRAG motor, or maybe I think the Ford Racing blocks need MAJOR prep work, or maybe I think the top dollar BBC Dart blocks have splayed caps (they do by the way).

Dart most likely does know more about engine blocks than i do. in fact, i would hope that they did. you, however, are just a moron with a big mouth and an empty head, and ill gladly correct you, since im the only one here who seems fit to do it.

POINT NUMBER 1

do you know why Dart uses billet caps, and why SVO does too?

no, you dont.

their use is common because of the simple fact that it is more COST EFFECTIVE to CNC a peice of billet steel than it is to produce casting plates, pour molds, and then run them through five milling centers. machining cost money. with Dart's CNC centers, they can save alot of money by putting billets on everything they can. not to mention the fact that they can hype it up and shovel it down the throats of morons like you.

let me tell you why billet caps are bad for drag motors. billet steel does not give. the type of billet steel that is used in mains is even harder (brinell) than 4340 billet. now what do you suppose will happen when an engine sees detonation, as most drag engines do at one time or another? those billet caps will not absorb ANY vibration. it will be transferred back to the crankshaft and bearings, and sometimes into the block.

not only that, but billet caps dont expand at the same rate as high-nickle iron. do you know of any engine that goes through heat cycles as quickly as a drag motor? when sitting in the lanes a drag motor is cold. once staged, and the launch rpm is set, that crank starts hauling ass, and the heat starts to build very quickly. once the tree drops the motor is brought to MAXIMUM OUTPUT immediately, and stays that way for eight or nine seconds. so guess what, those caps youre so proud of are expanding at different rates and producing an out of round environment for the crank and bearings. thats a good thing, right?

there is a use for billet caps, and its not drag racing. its oval track. those motors warm up slowly, and then are brought to a steady rpm range where they stay for long periods of time. the blocks are machined accordingly. there is another aspect to circle track engines. THEY DONT DETONATE. five hundred miles of racing dictates that the engine be pulled BACK from the ragged edge, whereas drag motors can detonate the whole way down the track (they usually do) and still live to race another day.

POINT NUMBER 2

do you know why splayed bolts arent a good thing, especially when coupled with billet caps?

because splayed bolts pull in a different direction from the primary, load bearing fasteners. they distort the bores. how much, you ask? alot. once again, when fastened to torque, those bolts are holding two seperate materials together (high nickle iron and billet steel) even though they are pulling on seperate axises. did you think that was a good thing? if you think its not enough to make a difference, that might explain why you arent building engines. the only reason those blocks have splayed caps is because of the size of them. while they are beefy, they are still small blocks, and their design doesnt permit large fasteners being that close inside the main bulkhead. that would produce a weakness.

for everyones reading enjoyment, ill try to post a picture of a block with straight bolts. it's a Boss 302 block sitting in my garage. its got iron caps, and straight bolts. and guess what else? the caps dont bust on Boss motors. the cranks dont split. the main webbing is the weakest point on them, and even that isnt exactly "wimpy."

dont talk to me about the BBC blocks. those are converted to use every commercial cap thats out there. dont believe me? look at the underside of a Top Sportsman engine, if youve ever seen one, or have access to one. straight bolts. ever wondered what nitro engines run? after all, wouldnt they be the best example, since their blocks come without bores, caps, bolt holes, etc.....

my, my, my. they have straight bolts. yet their builders have the choice of any cap design they want. hmmmmm.

POINT NUMBER 3

this is the best one. oh yeah.

anyone who runs a dart block, as machined, is going to lose in whatever class it is they race. maybe you dont understand this, but when Dart says that their blocks are "machined," what they really mean to say is that they dont require large material removal. they still need alot of work. assuming the builder wants to do things right. that might not apply to you.

all you understand is what youve read in Summit catalogs and magazines. you think that a finish hone is all that goes into a race motor. well, ive got news for you. EVERY surface on a dart block needs attention. thats why Dart provides them "as-cast" to Winston Cup and Busch teams that request them.

you can take your crappy parts and sling them into a Dart block if you want. that doesnt make it a race engine. SVO blocks are sold the way they are for the very reason that people who dont know what the hell they are doing should stay away from one anyway. if you cant afford 600 dollars worth of basic machining prior to blueprinting, then you dont need to build a Dart or SVO based motor. the only thing Dart is saving people on machining is the cost of a simple bore. if thats a deciding factor for you, then fine. you can use the money you saved and put it towards a nice set of fuzzy dice.

its about time you faced up to the fact that im the sort of person that doesnt use Plasti-Gauge when he builds an engine. my set of mics cost me about as much as that dodge you own. dont bring your half-ass logic around here, and dont run your mouth to me, bitch. the turds coming out of my ass are less out-of-round than the bores in your engines.

first, billet caps are what 3 times stronger than iron? and they fit into the registers like a glove versus a stock cast cap. I prefer an iron cap because steel caps elongate more, but they are not making many these days with 4 bolt caps, World being the exception. more to the point I prefer an iron girdle/cap arrangement as used on 928 Porsche cars. one giant piece of iron with all the caps integral, tough to beat.


second, splayed 4 bolts are not preferred dumbass, they are essential in some blocks! everyone is aware of the problem with the splayed caps but most blocks DO NOT have enough "meat" in the webbing to withstand a second set of straight bolts. sure they could make every block with MASSIVE webbing but then what do you do with your internal engine parts? ashtrays? The nearest source of available iron to anchor the outer bolts is of course the bottom of the bore. Take a look at a 6.5 GM diesel, they put straight 4 bolt caps on it but cracks in the webbing is the most common failure. GM even went down from a 12mm to a 10mm bolt to try and fix the problem, no dice. The ONLY solution for that engine is SPLAYED caps.

third, the Ford blocks are SO far from ready when purchased that it is laughable! lifter bores? "maybe we will do them maybe not." main bore? "well as long as the caps fit it is good enough."
the dart block needs complete inspection of ALL areas too, but at least when it comes out of the box there is no mystery machining like the R302 block.

I too have a Boss 302 block on an engine stand right now, want a pic? What will that prove? I have an R302 sitting here too, interested?

tensile strength, yes. but unfortunately, dum dum, they arent load bearing. thats right. the BOLTS bear the loads. the caps serve as a secondary bridge. it is totally irrelevant what they are made out of. billets vibrate, and irons dont. more to the point, ive never seen an iron cap fail, unless it was taken out by the failure of the reciprocating assembly. and you havent seen one fail, either.

necessity is the mother of invention, NOT the mother of strength and durability. just call a splayed cap a "Band-Aid" and be done with it. dont tell me about 2700 rpm diesels. just admit it. they did what they did because they had to. the didnt want to make the main webbing as thick as it needed to be, so they were forced to use splayed caps. reduction in bolt sizes is not a reputable fix, and they knew it when they tried it.

No dumbass, the point was on some Ford blocks they machine the lifter bores, some they do not. We had one with 3 finished and 1 was jacked up and needed to be repaired. Another block was so far out on the line bore that the machinist did not even want to line bore it, but because there were no more available blocks at that time we HAD to use it. According to you that is nice for a $1600 block, right? Whats next are you going to tell us that an A4 block is better that a Dart block too?

Now you are talking out your ass. I called Ford and their response was that on R302 blocks it is a 50/50 chance of lifter bore machining. This was about 1 year ago and I hope that things have changed since then. Call and see for yourself, oh wait I forgot you know it all already.

Yeah, I changed everything underneath and that's the way it came out. It had an 81' spoiler on it until I hit a dog, so I tore the rest of it off.

It'll be all done when I drive it down there to run some of you Georgia fools this summer.

i have a question(honest question) if you had just recieved a car, and after tuning the ignition timing and carb, you find a noise that steadily gets worse only to find that it is your flexplate under extreme wear. what would you say caused it?

yup, when i dropped the trans i found one massively messed up flexplate and a couple missing bolts, luckily i never drove it but maybe 5 miles and nothing got messed up, a pretty easy fix
