View Full Version : Independent Race/Performance Shop Question [Insurance]

I got a strange question and I figured I'd ask here since we have a few folks that have their own race/performance shops.

Do independent shops such as Petty [Proline?] building race engines or Pro Speed doing their thing provide health insurance for employees?

Reason I ask... I'm REAL interested in going to Lanier Tech for their Motorsports (racing) program. To learn the ins and outs of race cars and get into building high performance engines or doing something along the lines of performance shop work. BUT I have to have a job with health insurance to cover my transplant medicines, and doctor/hospital stuff like that.

I'd love to work for a little independent shop, but I don't know if some small place would provide insurance.

I really, reallly, really, don't wanna be a technician at a dealership - even though that's what I'm going for at Chattahoochee.

I know of some that do and some that dont. I would go out on a limb and say most dont though.

I'd say most don't

I'd also say that most don't, unless it's a really big shop and/or corporation. If wanting to get into something auto related you'd be better off going with a manufactuer of some sort. Like Holley for instance. Their big national headquarters is in Kentucky.

From what I have seen it is hard for a business with less that 20 employees to provide Health Insurance .. cost effectively..

Thanks for the replies. That's kinda what I figured, small shops couldn't afford it, especially for someone like me, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Yeah, that's something else that had crossed my mind awhile back, but I forgot about. Thanks for reminding me. :) Doing like the tech line for some place like Holley, Edelbrock or Comp Cams. Or hell, with the new Summit store opening nearby maybe some place like that.

The Racing program at Lanier prepares you really to be pit crew for Nascar or NHRA and as cool as hell as that'd be, I don't know if I'm ready to be gone EVERY weekend. I just wanna go to race car school. :D

I may be looking for a driver for when I go out of town-of course, then I would need health insurance.

if you decide to go to lanier tech, let me know as i have known one of the instructors for a long time. i bought one of the projects awhile back that never got started on and sold him a coupe that was slated for a race project as well.
as far as insurance, most small time shops cant afford it that i know of. i have my own insurance and its not real cheap but as i understand it, the more of a medical history you have, the higher they price the premium for you. mine has gone up nearly double in the last year with no major claims.they also have a 1 year pre-existing clause as well. insurance is a racket in my opinion as we cannot do without it but they can choose to charge whatever they feel like without much resistance

Oh cool. The only one I met was Bud Hughes, very nice guy. I went out there this past summer to meet with him and see the shop and ask about the program. He even took me straight down to admissions to apply to Lanier Tech. But I just couldn't swing moving out there...IF I even got accepted to the program.

I'd give my left tit to get into that program. At Chatt in Auto Tech, we've got like training boards for OBD II and Chevy Cavaliers to work on. At Lanier, there was a cut away blower on the table and race cars from Petty in the shop. I couldn't help but grin the whole time.

So I'm gonna try like hell to work it out, apply this fall and go for the interviews and stuff and maybe start next year. *crosses fingers* That's the goal at least.

And yeah, I've seriously gotta do something about insurance...Medicare is gonna drop my ass in less than a year because in their eyes I'm now "healthy."
