Okay, So I need to buy a helmet so I can run at Paradise. Mycar is a daily driven street car(no helmet) so I dont want to spend alot on a helmet. Summit has an open face helmet for $109 that has a snell rating. I also saw this helmet at Wal-mart. It is a motorcycle helmet. I remeber a thread on here a while back about this, but can I not just usethe motorcycle helmet up to a certain speed at the track? I mean if it is good enogh for a motorcycle impact is it not good enough for a car crash? Any help on this would be really helpful. I also tried on both helmes and like the Bell from Wal-mart better.
Here is the link to the Wal-mart one-

It may be fine for that track but if you ever go to one with a heavy tech in they may not let you run. Get the snell approved helmet because it may save your hard head one day. Never try to cheat your safety. :chair:

The snell rating is just an extra step in the testing. It is probley the same helmet but the did not buy a snell cert for the cheeper one. I will say that its not worth saving a few dollars go ahead and get a snell rated one and that way you have no problems.....I know that the DOT helmets are not allowed at Commerce, Valdosta or Bristol. Hope this helps.

This is what I was thinking. I want to be able to use the helmet anywhere I go.I know that the snell rated is a better helmet but it is my street car! Am I supposed to ride around all day on the street with a helmet on? I am not trying to be an ass, just asking. Up to what speed can you use an open face helmet? Cause the one from summit is open faced.I am only running in the low 13s right now.

Thanks for the help, keep the suggestions coming.

My wife has ran 10.50's @ Commerce with an open face and they never said a word. Not sure if it is legal or slipped through the cracks but we have been there several times with nothing being said.

No one said that you have to wear the helmet on the way to work or the store but if you go to a track even in a street car they will check to make sure that it is a rated helmet. Commerce does it everytime.

Gidden still wears an open face so if this is your street car I don't think you will have any problems.

the reason you cant wear a motorcycle helmet is because the liner is not fire rated.

"the reason you cant wear a motorcycle helmet is because the liner is not fire rated."

Okay, this trows a new wrench into things. The open face helmet that i bought does not have the fire retardent material, but it is snell rated. I think that Iam just going to spend the money and buy one of the full face G force helmets, but now i need to know if I need the one with fire retardent material or not to be legal, because there is a $100 difference.

Thanks for the help guys,

You don't need it to be fire retarded to be legal. I have one bell that has no nomex and a simpson that does. The snell rating has nothing to do with fire. The only time they want fire retarded nomex is cars faster than 150mph in the 1/4 with nitrous and all others over 200mph and nitro cars. They never look to see if mine was anything other than snell rated and my car was an nitrous car over 150mph..

No need to sweat the helmet till you run a class that requires a snell approved helmet (nmra, ffw, nhra, ihra ect.) Local tech doesnt give a shit as long as you have one....

Commerce checks your harness, helmet, fire jacket, etc. even on TNT nights. If you have a 12.99+ car they still check for a snell rating on the helmet. They are probably the only track that does this but they do.
