I have a Turbo XS blowoff valve on my 02 WRX. I also had a 01 RS with a 02 WRX in it with the same kind of BOV and I had the same problem out of 2 totally different cars with 2 different BOV's.

When I change gears a normal sound would be PSSSSTTTTT .

But sometimes when I change it just goes PST. Like it gets cut off real quick or its real quite.

What is going on with my car?

I know it may be hard to figure without hearing it but I tried my best.

Lower boost or maybe not a good vacuum source. Could need to be cleaned.

Also, might be adjusted too tight, so that if the boost is a few psi lower (on a less agressive pull), the valve closes prematurely.

So long as you're not hearing any compressor surge, it's nothing to worry about.

But if it doesn't make that big PSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTT11 No one will know he is going by.

On a serious note... I have actually added springs to mine so it will not open unless there are big swings from Boost to Vaccuum like when you are WOT and shifting or just WOT.

Car builds boost faster and it doesn't trail off at 7000 RPM.

Yep...BOV leakage is probably the #1 cause of the sale of bigger cams. Most people think their engine is just running out of flow up top, but it's really just a boost leak.

I run a Type R Greddy BOV and, while a bit frustrating to dial in correctly, I will say, it sure is nice to have a secondary vacuum port under the diaphragm. That way, the spring can be tight enough to keep closed under WOT, but gets a little assistance to open on medium throttle shifts. The secondary port is supplied directly by the charge pipe, pre-TB. Works great!

if its not recirculating, that is your problem, put the stocker back on or recirculate the one you have somehow, our cars arent made for VTA

^^^ While that is correct, I don't think that's the cause of the BOV being open for different amounts of time. I think it's more an issue of adjustment.
