ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY ANNOUNCES RETURN OF FRIDAY NIGHT DRAGS IN 2007
The overwhelming success of Friday Night Drags at Atlanta Motor Speedway has prompted speedway officials to announce their plans for a return of the series in 2007. Twelve events have been scheduled for the grassroots drag racing program featuring street legal cars and trucks along with high speed drag racing machines.
The Friday night shows will hit the drag strip with the Season Kick-Off on Friday, May 11 with the twelve event series concluding with the final Fall Classic in September. The Friday night events will include heads up drag racing with single elimination rounds each night. The schedule will also include various exhibition drag events with funny cars, pro drag bikes, jet cars and wheel standers. A full schedule with various promotional events will be released soon.
"The interest continues to be a surprise to us," said AMS vice president of events Brandon Hutchison. “There are a large number of people that are currently restoring cars, rebuilding cars or planning to compete in the events next season.”
Officials have stated there will be some changes in the classification process of the drag cars. Plans are to have a better separation of classes to create a more level playing field for each of the drag racing divisions, with the domestic, import, truck, pro street and pro divisions returning for 2007. Officials expect to announce a new class between the pro street class and pro class.
The twelve event series will also have the 'show-n-shine' car show returning to the nightly festivities. Event planners will create more classes for the car show and are also creating a prize pool for the top three vehicles in show judging.
