not too bad. Takes a little time.

These were black wheels off my Busa. Stripped the paint with aircraft stripper from the lip and polished. Prepped the inner and painted with diamond silver epoxy.

not to ask too many questions but does the aircraft stripper take the paint off pretty easily? and where to do you get aircraft stripper?

Dash

yes very easy and it's at most auto parts stores

after you strip the paint you just polish with a dremel?

onebluegt

i am thinking i might try this. before i go spend all that money on some wheels. i want to keep the centers that dark color and polish the lip. what do you advise.

I done the same with some wheels on a ol' FZR I had and after the stripper had taken care of the paint I used some Mothers "Billet Polish" and they shined like new....:bling:

IF you want to keep the centers black then all you need to do is mask and tape off the centers where the smooth edge ends and the textured part begins and that should protect the parts you want to keep black.....If you want just bring them by the shop and ill show you where to tape off and any other questions you might have...

Do you know who you are talking to! Nothings difficult for Dash! He's more well rounded than Chuck Norris. He doesn't even sleep. He just waits.:lhdevil:

dont use a dremel...on most all you need is mothers polish...if u do need sandpaper start smooth and get smoother, then use mothers....heres the thing about the stripper...its fine and dandy unless your factory wheels are powdercoated (newer hondas), then its a bitch to get off....otherwise its a simple process

Depending on what kind of finish you are going for, when the paint is first stripped off the aluminum finish will have a top coat (clear coat if you will) on it. You can shine it up real nice without sanding or like nitro says you can sand the coating off and give it a bare aluminum look. The only down side to taking the coating off is the bare aluminum will be delicate to some cleaners that you would use to clean the wheels and it also needs repolishing from time to time...so the choice is yours.......good luck and take your time and it will come out nicely...:lhdevil:

Chuck who??

Hey, the pics of both set of my wheels are with hand polishing. No abrasives, sanding, anything. Just removed the paint, cleaned the surface to remove any residual, and used soft cloth and alum. polish. Suzuki wheels have a fine machined groove that you can sand out if desired, but I didn't bother and it looks fine to me. The Kawi wheels are smooth and polish to a very high luster with minimal effort.

I am still trying to figure the Chuck Norris reference.

Here is a "How-To" http://www.zx-10r.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13202

Me and my buddy polished the lips of his wheels and didn't tape off the center of the wheel and just sprayed the paint remover on them. It took the smooth finish paint off, but not the pitted center paint. Saves alot of time.

If you want a great deal on chrome wheels, call Superbike Specialties and talk to Adam (912)964-4001.

Excellent advice guys. I tried a small area before work just to see what i would be getting into, turned out real nice thanks. i taped off the inner wheel like you said. then i got me a paper towel strip and soaked it with the aircraft stripper and let it sit on the wheel. the paint just bubbled right off, awesome advice there guys. i will do some more tonight when i leave work. thanks again

how long can you let the gel sit? it says on the back 15 - 45 minutes. i have let it sit for as long as an hour and a half. can it sit for a whole shift at work?

Hmm If it were mine I wouldnt chance it. letting it dry and sit for that amount of time just might start eating into the coating on the aluminum and then you will have to sand it off and polish it back out........

Thanks, I got my wife to go out there and wipe off the wheels. she said it just peeled off the front and looks good the rear still has paint in some spots so maybe I can finish it up late tonight.
