I am in the market to get a dog. I have an idea of what I want and I am wanting to start out with a puppy and let him / her grow instead of going to adopt an older dog.
so im lookin to see if anyone knows someone or some place that would be a good place to look for a puppy.
im a real big fan of a boxer or that type of dog.
CJ
ps- i dont really want to spend 1k on a dog.

go to the shelter in your town or atlanta... i use to work for a non-profit non-kill shelter in chicago and boxers and pit bulls are the most sheltered dogs there is... dont go to a pet store bc if you do your only supporting puppy mills http://www.narn.org/video/PuppyMill.mov (dont watch if you care about animals)

no problem... lemme know if you have any questions on health or anything... dont listen to vets about nutrition... most of them no nothing about nutrition, they take one class on it, i know this bc im thinking about getting my degree

go to the pound. as your writing a check to buy a dog, many others are getting put to sleep. i have a 9 year old dog from the pound and she has been the best dog ever. i got her as a small puppy and have had her since i was 21. shes great, and no dog that i could have bought would have been any better.

I have a pure bred champion pedigree, akc registered doberman with a history going back ten generations that i bought from a breeder in atlanta for $450. I also have a Bullmastiff/Pitbull mix that i got from a dog rescue place for $150. Then i have a mini dachshund that my dumbass wife bought at the mall for $900. Go figure....... Check the AJC classifieds, thats where i found that Dobie

i agree about the dogs from the pound or a shelter. they CAN be great tempered dogs. it all depends on how they were treated previously.

Definatley go to the pound. They have a lot of really good looking dogs, but I know at eh Cobb county shelter, you have to ask to see the Pit Bulls and other "Dangerous" Breeds, like boxers, dobies, and rotts.

Good place to look is on Craigslist. There are a lot of shelters that post dogs on there along with other people trying to adopt their dogs out that they do not have time to spend with them that the animals deserve.

Why do they consider the boxer a dangerous breed? I have had 3 of them- 2 had to be put to sleep due to cancer and they were great- even when my kids were real little. I never had a worry in the world about them hurting one of my kids.

its just an insurance issue most shelter have to do... if your stuck with a dog that is great with your kids but the kids have friends over and the dog nips one of the friends the shelter is in deep shit... i got bit by many dogs when i trained them bc they were trying to protect the family
