Ok guys, it's no secret I'm really a GM guy, even though my last 3 vehicles have been Fords. As most of you know, I recently picked up a '93 LX, 4cyl for a DD. There's a few things that I'm going to be wanting to do to it/address that I'd like some info on. I've read around the net, but there seems to be so much misinformation out there, I figured I'd ask here.

The front rotors on the car are warped. Not bad, but enough you can tell. The same with the rear drums. They have highspots on them than you can feel/hear when freely rotating the rear wheels with the car in the air. I really don't like having the drum brakes on the rear. I've read that a quick/easy way to get rid of the drums in the rear is simply to swap in an 8.8 from a 5.0 car for the 7.5 that came in the 4cyl cars. Is it really just the easy? Unbolt, bolt in? Or is there a little more to it, i.e swapping out proportioning valve, e-brake cable, etc, etc, etc?

And as for the front, should I just buy new 4cyl rotors ($20/ea) or could I just as easily/cheaply find a set of 5.0 front brakes? Once again, what all is involved in converting the front 4cyl brakes to the 5.0 stuff? Before anyone asks/adds, I'm not really interested in going 5-lug. At least for now. Perfectly happy with the Pony's on the car. There's a few little things here and there I'm having to address with the car, but that's all to be expected with any vehicle 14yrs old. With as many of you Mustangers around here, I figured some of you could offer up the correct info on the brake swapping, and maybe even have some of the parts laying around cheap.

Thanks in advance.

The rear for my '85 just bolted right in....swapped from the factory 7.5 to an 8.8 with 3.73's. We even transferred all the new brake parts over from one rear to the other...same parts. Only thing that had to be changed was the fitting from the brake hard line to the flex line, and that was mmore than likely due to it being an '85 getting a '90 8.8. Don't think there would be difference in a later model Fox though.

Front brakes are different.....have to change the spindles to V8 spindles to go up to the 11" fronts. I have the same issue with the '85....has the 10" front brakes like a 4 cyl car. To upgrade to the 11" fronts, have to change the spindles. I would just put new rotors on the front and let it ride....not like the 4 cyl car is fast enough to need the bigger brakes....lol.

swapping to an 8.8 will only give you rear disc if you use a 94 or newer rear end, which is wider than that of a fox body, which means your wheels would stick out farther.

swapping to the bigger front brakes is easybut does require the spindles

I have a set of rear disc brakes off a 93 Cobra for my 92 LX. I don't like the rear drums either.

So even the 5.0 LX's & GT's had drum brake 8.8's? The way I'm reading what you're saying is that rear discs only came around on the SN95's?

Also, while I have you Stangers in here. I'm pretty sure I've got a leaking injector that I'll be needing to address. Any of you out there have a good working set of 4cyl injectors? I believe they're 14lb injectors. If I can't find a good set of used ones, I'll just pull these and have them cleaned and rebuilt.

Yup, disc brakes were on sn95 and newer cars, (also had them on the 93 cobra's and svo cars)

One more thing. Hehe,...you guys are going to hate that I bought a Mustang with all the questions.

Let's talk 140mph speedo. I of course have the 85mph one. What all is involved for swapping in a 140? I read that all I want to do is swap in the actual speedo, not the entire cluster because the 4cyl tach is different than the V8 one? What can I expect to pay for a 140 speedo? Just the speedo needed or the cable, speed sensor, etc in addition?

Thanks.

Gotcha. Thanks for the link. That clears up a lot. I was under the impression some of the later year Fox body's with V8 had rear disc. That being the case, looks like I'll probably just keep what I have and replace the drums/rotors. Hell, they're cheap enough.

Ok, looks like it's really easy on the speedo. Just swap the 140 speedo in, and your done. Don't swap the entire cluster b/c the tach won't work right with the 4cyl. So, that being said, anyone have a '90-93 140 speedo they want to let go cheap?

I wouldn't try to hunt down anything SVO for your car since they had a 5 lug 7.5" setup. Then again 94 and newer had the same. 93 Cobra's and I think T birds '87-88 had rear 4 lug disc.

The more I think about it, I'm probably just going to go tomorrow and get new rotors/drums/pads/shoes for the stuff that's already there.

Still wouldn't mind picking up a '90-'93 140mph speedo if anyone has one cheap.

Thanks.

just go to the pullapart, theone in norcross has somany turbo coupes, jack the rearend outof oneof them, free 3.55or3.73 gears(which 4 cyl.come with anyway),8.8inch, and disc brakes. You'll need a proprtioning valve but that'sallI can think of right now.

i currently use the thunderbird rear disc setup and a proportioning valve. the brake kit can be purchased from the frpp catalog. the downfall to this kit is if you have to convert to 5 lug later there isn't a 5 lug rotor commercially available that will cross over. nothing a good drill press can't handle though. stops great too...
