hey guys. I'm brand new to the whole street racing thing. I have a couple of friends from work who are really into it, and told me they'll help me along, once I get a car. I'm 16 years old, and looking for officially my first car :p Any ideas? I want something that's pretty quick, and in good condition. I am currently looking at a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-TURBO (5spd manual)- that my friend recommended. It only has 68k miles on it, and is in what appears to be fantastic condition (haven't checked it out in person yet). Is this a good car to start out with and work my way up? Should I start out with a Mustang, old BMW or another car? Any other ideas? Like I said, I'm really new to this, I know nothing.
Thanks in advance!

first off,
street racing is crime.
I don't mean to sound preachy/parent-like but it isn't worth any of it when you get arrested and taken to jail.
Race at the TRACK! :D
so /rant
Is this going to be a daily driver and toy car or just a weekend car?
If its going to be both a daily driver and play car its going to be expensive because you'll want something faster and faster and it will get to the point where its no longer a decent street car.
If you get an import, KNOW that after 3-4k you will still have decent gas mileage and be quick but will be much slower than if you put the money into a 87-93 mustang.
Mustangs make good, cheap drag cars but you'll be stuck getting 15-18 around town with a decent bolt-on setup.
A decent 87-93 mustang with bolt-ons will run anywhere from 8.50-9.0s in the 1/8 depending on tires and the GST will be doing good to run 9.5s or so with the bolt-ons.

I love BIMMERS. But they will break you ($$$$$)
Stick with the Fox Body Mustang. Very Cheap and take a Beating.

haha right...i walked a gst(on 10 psi vs. 14 it has stock)...if i were you go with a honda...prelude or civic...ITR swap(type R) is the way to go but you can get a CTR(also type r) and it will be quick as well....put it this way an ITR straight up walked my ass(no turbo) and the CTR is dead even with my car...but just pick something that you will have fun with and go with it...
When i was in HS...my senior year raced a mustang(walked him) and got caught....i didn't get caught racing but we were driving side by side talking about it when i saw blue lights in my rear view...thought about running for a sec. but i figured might as well take whats coming to me...after all its not too smart to talk about it in school prior to it happening(like i did) especially if you live in a small town. Anyway long story short the cop changed the ticket from aquiesce in racing to careless operation(town ordinance) so it was just a fine of $500 and no license revokation and no pt.s but if you get caught and they charge you with Illegal Contest of speed you [B]will be arrested[B] and the fine is heavy and don't plan on driving for a long time(especially if you live w/ your parents)and you will lose your license....and to add insult to injury you will have SR-22 insurance which is Signed Risk and it to is alot of money...but what i do i weigh the good with the bad and go with what feels right....for me street racing is a way of life...have never passed up a race unless i felt something was wrong with the situation...but yea life's lessons and its better to do it while you're young cause what do you have to lose...and if they charge you with Illegal Contest of Speed if your car is street legal you may have a chance to buy it back at a public police auction(really expensive) or if its not(or if the cops are real assholes) they will crush it! but like i said lifes lessons ya know...I have raced a million times but have only been caught when it was planned...the way i see it its too random for the cops to find out if you just go out looking for a race by yourself, but when you get a group of people together just keep in mind people talk and cops are people too...just keep all this in mind....
good luck with whatever you decide!

I am from NC as well, Winston Salem Area, Check out craigslist if you haven't already tons of cars in the Ral/dur area. From MR2 turbos to mustangs. I agree with a few others get you a fox body or 94-95 mustang so you don't have to worry about emissions, 5spd. There is a 95 Cobra for sale for 6500/obo, has 3.73 limited slip axle. BBK cold air kit,BBK rear upper and lower control arms,Steeda shifter, and Flowmaster cat-back exhaust system this should be a mid 13sec car right out of the box, throw some 1.6 roller rockers, headers, underdrives, 65-70mm tb, off road h pipe and you are running high 12's with some drag radials. If you shopped around you could add all these parts for about $500 bucks, so say you bought the car for 6000 then 500 in upgrades, 200 in gaskets and a little time to put them on you have 6700 in a 12sec car!! Sure honda can go fast but alot of time and money, an ITR swap alone you are looking at $6000 for the engine, shipping and material required to install, not counting any upgrades and then if you run a perfect pass you are looking at mid 14's on DR's. I have a buddy that has a K20 civic that I know for a fact he has $6000+ in the engine swap plus he only knows how much more in the upgrades (exh, int, headers, hondata, dr's............) He puts down 250 fwhp all motor and only runs 13.7x. I have a 94 GT Auto paid $3500 for the car, have all bolt-ons shopped around bought used have $550 in ud pullies, off road H-pipe, cai, 3.73, explorer intake, bbk75mm tb and tf elbow. Now I am putting an additional 650 into it with 1.6 rr, fully ported stock heads, aluminum drive shaft, shorties, subframe connectors and a cam and I will be in the high 13's for $4700 bux. The thing that kills me is auto and convertible, once I swap to 5spd ($900) or shift kit and stallconvertor in my AODE ($500) I will be low 13's and I will still have less than an ITR swap in my car and upgrades. Or even a camaro or trans am bone stock runs mid13's to high 14's depending on year and trans.
There is NO replacement for DISPLACEMENT!

another good option is 240sx with an "RB" Swap not the sr20, you can pick up a blown engine 240sx for $500-$1000 and pick up an RB20DET for about $2200 that includes engine trans ecu and harness, also includes getting a new clutch, boost controller to bump the boost too 10, upgrade fuel pump and pressure regulator and greddy emange, spend another $150 buck and get it tuned you have less than 3 grand and you are running mid-high 13's 250+ rwhp my brother just sold his, he did his motor swap in a weekend by with just the help of his wife. Or for an extra 600-700 bux you can opt up and get the RB25DET and you are looking at 300+rwhp with the same mods listed above and high 12's - low 13's, upgrade the turbo and get this baby to 500HP with stock internals!!!! and you running low 11's if you can get it to hook!! drag slicks
