I dont know too much about them to be thruthful...I know that they are slow on the big end but I hear that they run the corners extremely well.

Everyone on the other motorcycle boards, they say they are time bombs. The have lot's of troulble out of them.As far as most of us on this board,we just race straight line, and well,a V-Twin or a single cyl. just isn't enough.I'll try to get you some info on the Buell's though.

I'd rather get a buell for a twin.

Buell, I wish you could talk to my friend Flyer about his Buell, he would ENLIGHTEN you a little!!

Let me tell you a few things about his so far, with no exaggeration included.

Flyer is about 45y/o, and has a white lightning.
SO far the huge shock that lays underneath has failed 3 times. Twice under warranty once out, and they won't stand behind it, $1200.00!!
The rear cylinder head ripped out of the frame, the front head blew a gasket.
Belts, I think he lost count!
He carries wire with him when he rides, because he cannot keep the exhaust from breaking off from the vibration!!
These are a few of the big things, and many more little things go wrong.
Mirrors are ornimental due to the vibration, you can't see anything in them!
Top speed, is about 135-40, and thats takin life in your own hands with a V-twin from the early 1900's under your nuts!!

GO ahead, buy a Buell, find out for yourself!!
Then try and sell it again, cause he has been trying for almost 2 years! RESALE IS ZIP!

I hate to bring up a dead topic but i'm really attracted to the buell line especially the firebolt
after talking to insurance and learning that my insurance payments would be higher than my bike payments, i decided to tone it down and i'm going to have to settle for somehting less than three thousand
That price range really limits my options within buell's line of bikes cause i'm afraid that the blast may be a disappointment and leaves me with a lightning or firebolt which are hard to find in good shape for that price
I've had a friend who rides a cbr tell me that i pretty much need to drop the idea of a buell and buy a japanese bike

but i was just curious to see if anyone had any more information that may swing my decision one way or the other

I'll throw in my two cents and you can take it or leave it. For background, I'm 39 years old and I'm not a straight-liner. I enjoy a good twisty road and I couldn't give a shit less what the top end is on any motorcycle I've ridden since 1990...which is the last time I roadraced a bike. I ride purely for enjoyment and I subscribe to the philosophy that "It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow".

As far as Buell, I've put a few miles under one and I think you'll be strongly satisfied with a modern Lightning or Firebolt if you can stomach the extreme vibration. My first impression was that the Buell is a pretty cool bike once I got over the very upright seating position...bear in mind I'm used to a Ducati that most people call a torture rack. The bike handles like a dream and only has a few operational quirks that you'll have to work around. The cable clutch is pretty much "on or off" and doesn't offer much feel, and I thought it was a little grabby. The throttle doesn't modulate as well as most other bikes and had too much slop in it as adjusted. That could probably be rectified with a little time and a wrench. To me, though, the damning quirk is the very obtrusive low end vibration. From idle through about 3000 rpm the bike shakes like an epileptic on acid! If I was Eric Buell I'd be trying to get HD to give me a shot at their liquid cooled engine or to build me a split crank-pin version of the air cooled twin. Either way, I think Buell is still a couple of generations away from selling me a bike.

Hotrod's description of older Buells as parts eating monsters is accurate. Banish any thought of buying a Buell more than 2 or 3 years old. The cost of ownership is too high!

Now that that's out of the way, have you considered a Ducati? Old (1991-1998) 900SS models can be had in your price range and the maintenance isn't as bad as most folks would lead you to believe. If you gotta have a twin, the Ducati is a superior choice to the Buell in every way I can think of....but I'm a little biased.;)

Stick on a post if you want information about anything else Buell or otherwise. I'm sure someone here will have experience with it!

Cheers,

Cloner

Hey thanks I've actually looked only briefly at Ducatti just because of the fact that they sounded out of my price range and riding ablility (none yet) but i've even been desperite enough to look at katans which i never thought would entrest me

Triumph was probably at the top of my list of bikes to try next to the Buells and i've been able to find a couple of them cheap enough but with the recomendation of Ducati i will definetly do some more looking and let you know what i find or what direction i'm going to lean in regards to manufacturer
