I heard about this all the way up here. The little girl and her family are in our prayers. Does it look like she will pull through?
PizzaGuy

the doctors are not optimistic. she went downhill quite a bit last night, but she is slowly starting to turn aroun just a little bit. she has a very long way to go, but if anyone can do it she can.

I really hope she pulls through. I am sorry, but i know nothing of the specifics. How did it happen?

unfortunately, its hard to know the full details, the two eyewitness stories are different. in general, ashley was stopping at the crosswalk and crashed her bike. she went over the front and into the lane that the bus was in. the best we can tell, the rear tires of the bus caught her.
please pray for the driver of the bus also. we certainly dont think it was her fault, and you can imagine how terrible she feels.

The article in the Knox News Sentinel today says the rear wheels of the bus rode over her head. What a horrible accident. Prayers sent.

tragicly, it is clear that she is not going to make it. the life support is the only thing keeping her alive, and she has failed all tests for brain function. they will test her again inthe morning, but they have never had a test reversed. they are keeping her on life support long enough for everyone to say good-bye.
please dont stop praying. for Ashley, her parents, and friends and family. thank you all so much.

prayers sent. I somewhat know the father myself, and it's horrible to hear something so horrible could happen to a person as nice as he, and as young as the girl is. I also just heard they are allowing people to say their goodbye's and about the morning re-test.
Everyone again please pray for this family.

A friend of a friend said that the girl died this morning.
..very sad for friends and family, I'm sure. ..and a lesson for the rest of us. Enjoy time with your family and friends, while you can.
That is such terrible news. I didn't realize until I read today's Oak Ridger that I graduated high school with both parents of the girl. :(

i'm terribly sorry to hear the loss of the little one's young life...my condolence's are with, and a lot of my Marine buddies and I had a moment of silence for her last night during the Marine Corps B-day...she shall be guarded forever by the fallen United States Marines.

The icing on the big shit cake is that people have been apparently asking for that intersection to be altered due to it being unsafe. Saying that "someone will end up dying" and now look what happens.
Way to go Oak ridge

Man, if the little girl wrecked on her bike, I don't know what OR could have done to help avoid this accident.
That type of tone you posted with really haa no place in this thread.
Personally, I have no kids, but I know how attached I am to my cats, so I can't even imagine how these parents feel.

The tone has every reason to be here.
I dont know the full story but there is something about that intersection that has parents pissed off and wanting things changed to make it safer. Whether or not that played into the girls death, i dont know.
If it did, and Oak Ridge kept telling parents to piss off all this time then yeah i think the city of oak ridge can eat a big one.

Is it the intersection or the fact that they do not run buses for kids that live within a mile of the school? From what I have been able to read from afar it seems that is what they are upset about. Like I said earlier, I couldn't even imagine the grief from losing a child. My heart goes out to her parents and siblings.

for once i agree with BP. sadly, the parents have been some of the hardest pushers for a change. they dont want to change the intersection. in oak ridge, if you live within a mile of a school, you cant get a bus. thats pretty normal. but there should certainly be a crossing guard there. the middle school is 1/2 block away from the busiest intersection in town, and not a crossing guard in sight. if there had been a crossing guard there, this could have been avoided. the bus was not moving when she crashed, according to eyewitnesses.
As she approached the intersection she swerved around a pedestrian on the sidewalk, her front tire dropped off the sidewalk and she flipped over the handlebars and under the bus. At that point the bus driver started rolling forward to turn right, as she scrambled to get up. She didn't get up in time and the bus ran over her, and it was witnessed by a bus load of kids.
There is an issue with buses not picking up kids within 1 mile of the school, and the danger it causes at the crossing (both Illinois and the Turnpike) but this isn't the issue here. The very best case you could make would be that she wouldn't have been riding her bike in the first place if there was bus service, but that's a long shot. She was not trying to cross the road.
She and her parents were very generous and donated her organs. I know a 12 year old girl in Nashville received her heart.

Perhaps something so simple as a curb that was angled, rather than square could have made it possible for her to turn her bike back into the curb, and at least fell onto the curb instead of the street.
PizzaGuy
11-13-2007, 03:27 PM
the curb is sloped for the crosswalk. a crossing guard could have prevented the whole thing, except maybe the bike crash.

It happened at North Tulane and the turnpike? That intersection really isn't THAT close to Robertsville. At the risk of sounding insensitive, I don't think it is realistic to put a crossing guard at every major intersection.
Horrible story nonetheless. I didn't know the Paine's and I don't have kids, but the story still hits close to home.

And perhaps if the bike had bigger tires she would have been ok. And perhaps if it had rained she wouldn't have been riding, or perhaps etc, etc....

Laurie said she wants people to remember Ashley as “the good girl she was,” and she appreciates what Ashley’s friends and other people were doing Monday afternoon as they demonstrated at the intersection of Oak Ridge Turnpike and North Tulane Avenue, the site where Ashley was injured Friday.

It may be where the crosswalk is, but if she had ridden off of a squared off curb (not directly at the crosswalk), it's nearly impossible to turn back up onto it.

yeah, i see what you are saying. but it seems that the drop off the curb threw her from the bike. its so hard to know what happened. there are several differing eyewitness stories. no matter what, it is a huge tragedy.
For anyone who may be interested, receiving of friends will from 6-8 on friday in oak ridge.
Thank You all,

And you're a crybaby dickhead for saying bullshit whiney ass things like "maybe if there wasn't a square curb she would've been ok. Sue the curb manufacturer!"
Shut the fuck up. And no, I'm not kidding either.
I was making a point that it was a terrible freak accident that couldn't have been foreseen and can't be taken back by throwing blame around at schools, city governments, or even the evil curbs.

That's the third location for a girl that got her heart. I guess it doesn't matter where the girl is though.
